Microsoft Dynamics GP: Remote Access Best Practice
With people starting remote working and with the shift that this may bring to the way people work and access applications and services in the future, one thing has become clear, that accessing Dynamics GP from home can sometimes be tricky.
We’ve seen an increase in the number of users who are trying to do this, some successfully and others not so, the main reason for this is how people connect and use the GP application. For customers who use tools like Remote Desktop Services or have some form of remote access to their office computer, then this works fine as GP is running over the internal network still. It is just the display that is being transferred to the user’s computer at home which improves speed and there is less chance of data corruption.
In the main, the people who are struggling and having issues are the users who are trying to run GP over a Virtual Private Network (VPN) over the internet. Microsoft does not recommend using any Database Application, such as Dynamics GP in this way. Previously this has been known to hang data processing jobs and also more seriously, has led to data corruption, which has in turn has necessitated taking the system being down whilst data fixes are carried out to either remove or fix the damaged data.
