What’s Coming in the October 2025 Business Central Wave Release

Microsoft’s next major update for Dynamics 365 Business Central is just around the corner. As part of the platform’s twice-yearly release cadence (April and October), the 2025 October Wave (Release 27) introduces a mix of usability improvements, new reporting options, and smarter AI-driven tools.

This release builds on a year of significant innovation across the Microsoft ecosystem. While the previous wave brought transformative changes such as contract management, this update focuses on refinement, flexibility, and user control. Microsoft is aiming to make Business Central not only more intelligent with deeper Copilot and AI capabilities but also more adaptable by delivering new features as optional extensions.

During our recent webinar, mhance Dynamics Consultant David Butcher shared an early look at the most significant changes coming in the October release. Whether you’re preparing to test in a sandbox, planning future rollouts, or simply curious about what’s next, here’s a comprehensive roundup to help you understand what’s on the horizon.

A More Controlled, User-Friendly Release

Unlike last year’s release, which surprised many users with the sudden arrival of contract management, Microsoft is taking a more measured approach this time.
New functionality will be delivered as optional extensions, giving organisations the choice to install features when they’re ready, instead of having them automatically switched on.

Copilot & AI Enhancements

AI remains a major focus. Copilot is getting smarter across multiple areas, including:

  • Sales and Payables agents – better recognition of data on documents and more accurate suggestions.
  • Autofill improvements – enhanced accuracy when automatically populating customer details such as addresses and contact information.
  • Resizable Copilot panes – adjust the window size to display more results or reduce clutter.

These updates promise faster, more reliable automation and data entry across everyday tasks.

Power BI Pack Goes Open Source

The Power BI Sales and Purchase Pack is being refreshed with:

  • Seven brand-new reports (two sales, five purchase).
  • New semantic models with enhanced location tracking and project reporting.
  • Dimensions as slicers for deeper analysis.

Importantly, Microsoft is making the source code open. Previously, these reports were locked, but soon you’ll be able to customise them to match your organisation’s needs (Power BI licence required).

Financial Reporting Upgrades

Financial reporting within Business Central is getting a significant boost:

  • Dynamic column headers – include dates (month, quarter, year, etc.) directly in column titles.
  • Multi-currency columns – show local and additional reporting currencies side-by-side.
  • Job-queue scheduling – automate report generation and email delivery.
  • Excel editing – create or modify row definitions directly in Excel.
  • Change notifications – alerts when GL account names change so reports stay accurate.

These enhancements make it easier to produce timely, multi-currency reports and distribute them automatically.

Streamlined Fixed Asset Purchases

Purchasing multiple fixed assets is now simpler.
Instead of creating individual lines for each item, users can specify a “number of fixed asset cards” on a single purchase order or invoice. Business Central will automatically generate the required asset records and split costs accordingly, perfect for bulk equipment purchases such as laptops.

UK & Ireland Localisation Improvements

The UK version of Business Central is moving from a dedicated localisation to a global W1 platform with a UK extension.

  • UK customers will notice little change day-to-day but benefit from easier international rollouts.
  • Irish customers who need to submit UK VAT via Making Tax Digital (MTD) will now be able to add the UK extension to their W1 environment.

Other Notable Enhancements

  • New Accounts Payable role centre – a focused home screen for purchase ledger tasks.
  • Audit trail date book reports – export full GL transaction listings for compliance.
  • Advanced “Tell Me” search (preview) – more intelligent navigation using natural language queries.
  • Shopify connector updates – improved troubleshooting and mapping of Shopify Plus POS staff to Business Central salespeople.
  • Quality app (optional) – supports quality checks, quarantine procedures and certification tracking.
  • Sustainability tracking – expanded Scope 3 tracking, energy source recording and ESG reporting.

Preparing for the Update

The October Wave release will roll out gradually through October and November.
Some features are already available in preview sandboxes, giving organisations the opportunity to test functionality before it reaches production. If your Business Central environment includes customisations especially those triggered during posting we recommend testing early to ensure compatibility.
